Skal International is a non-profit foundation that that inspects organic harvesting and production methods in accordance with the public law, based on EU-Regulation. Skal's final aim is to offer certainty to the consumer that a product with the indication "organic" really originates from an organic production process. Skal realizes this by an independent survey of the organic producers by means of inspection and certification. Also, each onesie you touch was touched by an organic farmer in India. The farmers who produce the garments are treated with dignity and charged a fair price for their organic cotton - as monitored by The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)/Control Union. The manufacturer is licensed by the Indian Government and regulated to abide by international labour laws and fair labour practices. So, not only do organic farming methods improve soil fertility and safeguard farm workers' and their family's health - it preserves the quality of their local environment. How different is Organic Cotton? Organically grown cotton is cotton grown in soil that has been certified free from pesticides, herbicides and other cytotoxins for at least 3 years, Organic farming uses 50% less fossil fuels than conventional agriculture. Organic cotton farming builds strong soil through crop rotation, compost and tillage, retains water more efficiently because of increased organic matter in the soil, and results in production yields either the same or better than conventional cotton. Certified organic cotton farming also prohibits the use of genetic engineering, irradiation, sewage sludge, toxic and persistent synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. By its very nature organic cotton cannot be grown from genetically engineered seed. Given that 5 of the top 9 pesticides used on conventional cotton are are known cancer-causing chemicals (cyanide, dicofol, naled, propargite, trifluralin), supporting organic cotton is a win-win for the farmers, the planet and the babies. It is better quality, healthier and good for the environment. |
